Medical Education: Rahul Gandhi urges for inclusive medical education | Chennai News
Chennai: Congress and DMK have the joint responsibility of preventing medical education becoming accessible only to the rich, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a letter to chief minister M K Stalin on Sunday.
In the letter, Rahul Gandhi said Congress had been protesting NEET ever since results were announced on June 4. Rahul was responding to a letter written by Stalin on June 28, in which he highlighted “problems” of NEET.Stalin had written to the chief ministers of 12 states, telling them it was important to assert their constitutional rights and position in deciding admissions to higher educational institutions.
Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well, seeking exemption from NEET. He wrote a similar letter to Rahul Gandhi. In his letter, Stalin had stated NEET exposed the obvious defects in the higher education system. It created awareness about effects of a nationalised examination system on students from marginalised sections of the society.
Congress has been fighting for justice for students ever since the NEET UG results were declared on June 4 in advance, Rahul said. He had met thousands of students who were affected by the failure of the Union govt and the national testing agency (NTA), said Rahul. Justice should be rendered to 24 lakh students soon, he said.
He said his speech on the resolution to thank the President Droupadi Murmu brought attention to how poor students were affected by NEET. Talented students from rural backgrounds were unable to compete with other students due to lack of training institutes and other facilities. This was against our general education ethics, said Rahul.
Tamil Nadu was a pioneering state in structuring the general medical education system. A reason why it has a strong general health system in place. Anything that aims at weakening this system, should be condemned, Rahul said. He expressed his wish to meet chief minister Stalin soon.
It may be recalled that during his Lok Sabha election campaign on April 12 in Tirunelveli and Coimbatore, Rahul Gandhi said states could decide whether they wanted the anti-poor NEET or not.
