Skill India Programme provides training to 570 candidates in DK: MP

Mangaluru: In response to the question raised by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta regarding region-specific skill training being provided to youth in Mangaluru, the central govt revealed that in the last two years since the programme began in 2022, a total of 570 candidates were trained/oriented as fish and seafood processing technicians in the food processing sector, and 636 were trained/oriented in the tourism and hospitality sector as of Dec 31, 2024.
The Skill India Programme has been providing training to hundreds of youngsters in Dakshina Kannada, equipping them with industry-relevant skills across sectors, stated Capt Chowta in a release.
The MP, in his question, asked the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship whether the govt has any plans to provide region-specific skill training in Mangaluru under the restructured Skill India Programme, particularly in fisheries, shipbuilding, and marine tourism. He also sought to know about various other initiatives of the govt, including capacity building and skill exchange programmes.
MoS for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary, in the written response on Monday, said the Skill India Programme, comprising PMKVY 4.0, Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and the scheme for support to Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), has been equipping youth with industry-relevant skills tailored to regional needs across India, including Dakshina Kannada district covering Mangaluru city since 2022-23.
Under the PMKVY 4.0 scheme, 14 training centres have been empanelled in Dakshina Kannada district, imparting training for 90 people in the aerospace and aviation sector and 191 in the IT-ITeS sector as of Dec 31, 2024. Further, the Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE), implements the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) through a network of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) for the youth of the country, including 12 institutions in Mangaluru.
The MSDE has active memoranda of understanding (MoU) or memoranda of cooperation (MoC) with seven countries—Australia, Denmark, Japan, Germany, Qatar, Singapore, and UAE. These MoUs facilitate technical exchanges, collaborative training programmes, qualification recognition, and the sharing of best practices in sectors mutually agreed to by MSDE and the concerned country, the MP stated in a release.
